Apple Crumble Golden Buttery Topping (Print Version)

Baked spiced apples with golden buttery crumble topping for cozy desserts.

# What You'll Need:

→ Apple Filling

01 - 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
02 - 1/4 cup granulated sugar
03 - 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
04 - 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
05 - 1 tablespoon lemon juice
06 - 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

→ Crumble Topping

07 - 1 cup all-purpose flour
08 - 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
09 - 1/2 cup light brown sugar
10 - 1/2 cup rolled oats
11 - Pinch of salt

# How to Make It:

01 - Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly butter an 8 x 10 inch baking dish.
02 - In a large bowl, combine sliced apples with granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and flour. Toss until evenly coated. Spread apple mixture in the prepared baking dish.
03 - In a bowl, mix flour, brown sugar, oats, and salt. Add cold cubed butter and rub in with fingertips until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
04 - Sprinkle crumble topping evenly over the apples, covering completely.
05 - Bake for 35-40 minutes until topping is golden brown and filling bubbles around edges.
06 - Let cool for 10-15 minutes before serving. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or custard if desired.

# Additional Tips::

01 -
  • The crumble topping comes together in minutes and turns perfectly crisp and golden every time
  • You can use whatever apples you have on hand, even the ones that have been sitting around a bit too long
  • It serves a crowd beautifully but tastes even better the next morning for breakfast
02 -
  • Cold butter is nonnegotiable here, warm or room temperature butter will give you a paste instead of those gorgeous crumbly bits
  • Do not skip the rest time after baking, otherwise those apple juices will run everywhere instead of thickening up nicely
03 -
  • Peel the apples thinly rather than stripping them completely, the skin adds texture and holds the slices together better
  • If your crumble is browning too quickly, tent it loosely with foil for the last 10 minutes of baking
